Cape of storms? Well after 16 hours of sailing we had a lot of fun sailing Simon's Town to Houtbay and return and we can confirm it's name is well deserved.😅

The first day had westerlies that saw us rocketing to Hout Bay in 6 hours. Not bad if we do say so ourselves. Once around Cape point we encountered stronger than predicted winds gusting 25 knots and large 3m swell on the beam. This made for some exciting sailing and a few breakers over the side of the boat. Average boat speed: 9.5knots after rounding Cape Point.⚓

However not every #CapePoint rounding will be blessed with a westerly and the next day we were set to return into 35knot SE winds.
The 5.30am cast off time had has leaving early for what we knew would be a slog into the same 3m swells but this time 30-35knots winds... This time it would be on our nose! Motorsailing at 3-4knots to fight the swell to clear the worst of the storm was our best bet. It would take us 6 hours just to reach Cape Point. Average speed to Cape point: 3.5knots in a very confused sea.⛵

But as we rounded SW Reef we turned off the donkey and rocketed downwind. A doubled reefed main and no.4 jib still had us surfing at 13.5knots but all onboard welcomed the downwind sled ride home.😄

Back in August we were joined by 2 members of @offshoreyachtservices as well as 1 other aspiring skipper! The students enjoyed 3 days on the water getting to grips with actively crewing a sailboat! ⛵️

While the competent crew serves as our introduction course to sailing, it is by no means just an oppertunity to enjoy a cruise on the beautiful #FalseBay.

Students leave our courses understanding reefing, rope-work and tying knots, operating winches, points of sail and sail trim, helming, and how to effectively crew during emergency procedures.
For many of our students, this is a gateway course to becoming a @southafricansailing
#DaySkipper, all while achieving many of the prerequites required to attend a Day Skipper course. ⚓️

Our first course on our powerboat was fantastic⚓️ This group of girls had no powerboat experience and after an afternoon of training understood how to operate a powerboat safely🛥

Our courses start with the absolute basics of controlling a vessel and progress to teach good skippering habits, safe navigation amongst other vessels, getting a vessel onto a plane, and confidence bring a vessel back to her mooring 🙌

Well done to the @lawhillmaritime students who did extremely well on their first day out!

Every now and then, Mills Boat Academy takes a break from training to spend some time on the racecourse. While this year's @falsebayyachtclub #SpringRegatta initially had predictions for light SE winds a cut-off low set in leading to a weekend of gale force winds.

Saturday saw boats starting in 25knots of wind and quickly built with gusts well over 30knots. A decent start and a strong crew had the MBA team placed 3rd over the line.
It was a great experience sharing the race course with teams from different yacht clubs across Cape Town.

A massive motivation behind starting Mills Boat Academy was the goal of offering keelboat training to high-schoolers ⚓️

Today Mills Boat Academy partnered with @lawhillmaritime to train high school students as part of their sailing program.

These high school students join Lawhill in grade 10 and focus on maritime studies. Students graduating from Lawhill are placed in maritime jobs and find successful careers in the maritime industry. All of the students are Bursary funded, and since it's inception over 1000 students have graduated. What an incredible organisation!

Students enjoyed an awesome day on the water, and were kept warm by their @maidenfactor sponsored sailing kit! 🔥

A big thank you to @falsebayyachtclub who actively promote youth sailing and development ⛵️

A stunning day out on the water with the youngest sailors we've had on the boat so far! ⚓️

Max and Annadea completed their day skipper last week and this week decided to bring the rest of their family out to get a feel for sailing🌞

Even the youngest got involved with helming, and I must say, we were impressed with how well they did!
